Meet Cecilia Diaz Teran: Growing Through Every Opportunity

Each year, Arizona's top JAG student leaders are selected to serve as the University of Phoenix LEADS, representing more than 1,500 JAG students across the state. Throughout the year, they develop leadership skills, serve their peers, represent JAG Arizona at events, and prepare to compete at the National Career Development Conference (NCDC). Their journey is made possible through the University of Phoenix and the generosity of donors who help fund leadership development, professional clothing, travel, and competition expenses. For Cecilia Diaz Teran, a student in the Paradise Valley High School JAG program, becoming a University of Phoenix LEAD is another opportunity to challenge herself and grow. With an interest in healthcare and hopes of pursuing a career in the medical field, Cecilia is already looking for experiences that will help her develop as a leader and future professional.

"Being a LEAD means having the opportunity to represent not only my school but also my community while growing as a leader and learning valuable skills that I can carry with me into the future."

Cecilia enjoys opportunities that push her outside of her comfort zone and introduce her to new people. She participates in school activities and programs and hopes the positivity she brings to those experiences can make a difference for others. She also enjoys music, trips to the movie theater, running and hiking with her dogs, journaling, and painting.

Her family has played an important role in encouraging her to pursue new opportunities. Cecilia shared that some experiences are unfamiliar to her family, but they understand the importance of taking chances that can create new possibilities for her future and encourage her to do her best. As Cecilia begins her LEADS journey, she is setting expectations for herself that reflect the kind of leader she hopes to become.

"During this journey, I expect myself to stay committed and contribute positively to the team."

Through LEADS, Cecilia hopes to gain leadership experience and learn from both her advisors and fellow student leaders; all while building the confidence and skills she can carry into college and a future career in healthcare.
